1. Heart Health from Omega 3 Fatty Acid

Omega 6 fats are a part of our modern diet today, they are found in vegetable oils that reduce inflammation and promote heart health. With a good combined ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 and taking a sufficient amount will provide good protection and seriously lower the risk of sudden a heart attack, or even sudden death.

The benefits of Omega 3 for colon cancer greatly reduces risk of this type of cancer. For example, Eskimos, have a high fat diet but they eat a good amount of cold water fish that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Tests have shown that they are less prone for certain types of cancer. Animal and laboratory studies have shown that the fish oil slow down the progression of colon cancer. Ask a doctor before taking any supplements.

Recent studies have shown omega 3 fatty acids seem to block the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are responsible for causing cramping in the uterus. Some more mainstream doctors will disagree with this, but the overall benefits of omega 3 are so good it would be a great idea to give it a shot.

Fish contains the highest amount of omega 3, not like fatty meat products that are high in saturated fat. The American Heart Association recommends to eat fish at least two times a week (especially fatty fish). The serving size is around 3.5 ounces which is about the size of a deck of cards. Pregnant women and children under the age of 12 should limit the amount of fish they eat due to contaminants like mercury and other metals are naturally accumulates in rivers, lakes, and oceans. When fish eat, the mercury builds up in there bodies. The amount of toxins really depends on where it’s caught and what type of fish, so it’s really important not to eat too much fish so you can avoid such things like mercury poisoning. Mercury poisoning can cause harm to your brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system. That said, the benefits of Omega 3 outweighs the minimal risk of mercury poisoning.
For those who don’t like fish, a good alternative is pill form. You have probably seen them in the vitamin section at your local drug or grocery store. You might have heard that cheaper brands of fish oil pills may contain mercury. This is not true. It’s just competition trying to get you to pay more for their product. I recommend finding some that contain both Omega 6, and Omega 3. Omega 6 fatty acids are equally important because they work together with Omega 3. There has been no proof that any fish oil pills contain harmful amounts of mercury.
